The Cuban Sandwich
Its origin is still a mystery
A traditional Cuban Sandwich consists of Cuban roast pork, ham, yellow mustard, Swiss cheese, and pickles all served between two giant slices of pillowy soft Cuban Bread. Cuban Bread is not available in Santa Fe so we use French Bread which is a close substitute.
The famous and beloved Cuban Sandwich that originated where? Cuba? Or was it Key West or Tampa?
The origins are still passionately debated. Some say it is believed to have been introduced by the Taino tribe in Cuba. Others say it likely originated in cafes catering to Cuban workers in Tampa or Key West, two early Cuban immigrant communities in Florida centered on the cigar industry. It is so hotely debated that even old Cubans that claim to remember eating them are not believed due to lack of mentions in news articles and no published recipes that state a Cuban origin. Also, there is no photo evidence. So who knows? As they say,
"the truth is out there." We will keep searching.
